Santander is the southernmost municipality of Cebu at 137 km (85 mi) by road, with the travel time takes 3½-4 hours. It is also one of the location of sea ports that connect to the province of Negros Oriental. Aboard fast craft ferries, passengers can easily make way to Sibulan, with trips taking 20 minutes. Roll-on roll-off barges of Maayo Shipping Lines also carries motorcycles, private vehicles, buses and trucks from the port of Sibulan to Liloan (vice versa), with trips taking almost 30 minutes, also with the Liloan to Larena route with trips taking 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Santander is at the southernmost tip of Cebu island. The town was originally called Tañong, but as the Spaniards came, it was renamed Santander, after the city on the northern (Atlantic) coast of Spain.
The town was established in 1867; the parish in 1897.
